The OCC Charitable Trust has made its first major award of £1,000 to the Scaramouche Sailing Trust.
The Scaramouche Sailing Trust, a project of the Greig City Academy, London, UK, helps young people, “who would never otherwise get afloat, to reach the heights of sailing.” Greig City Academy is an inner-city, state-supported secondary school which focuses on academic excellence, moral character, and leadership development. The Academy’s sailing programme develops competent and accomplished sailors in pursuit of those goals. Many of its students are from diverse ethnic and disadvantaged backgrounds.
In less than 10 years, the programme has grown from one 22-foot “yacht” bought on eBay to more than 22 racing and cruising boats, including a 40-year-old Admirals Cup boat, S/V Scaramouche. In 2017, Scaramouche became the first state school-supported vessel to start and finish the Fastnet Race, placing 144th out of more than 360 starters.
The OCC Charitable Trust looks forward to sharing more information about this award and the young sailors who will directly benefit.
